CORRADO GIAQUINTO

by Gaetano Mongelli

Corrado Giaquinto was born in Molfetta on 8 February 1703.  The fifth of eight children, he left his hometown at a very young age to move to Naples, where his qualities as a draughtsman and painter were put to good use in the already renowned workshops of Nicola Maria Rossi and Maestro Francesco Solimena. As soon as he was 24, he opened his own art workshop in Rome. He painted for the most powerful courts in Europe, in particular the Spanish court, being the spokesman of an 'Escuela mista' that reconciled Neapolitan figurative culture with that of the Roman school. A leading exponent of Rococo, he was one of the protagonists of 18th century European painting and one of the most acclaimed artists of his time. His works adorned churches, palaces and museums, from Naples to Turin, from Rome to Cesena, from London to Paris, from the USA to Ireland and Argentina. Prof. Gaetano Mongelli, art historian and profound connoisseur of the Molfettese painter's life and works, has collected Giaquinto's most representative works (already in the Bonasia Collection), in a catalogue rich in documented images, to underline the painter's compositional greatness.   Volume size closed 20x26 cm (open format 40x26 cm) from number 104 pages, colour, paperback stitched binding.

A small jewel that embodies the roots and vocation of the city of Terlizzi, Borgo Sovereto has for centuries been a crossroads of ancient and modern routes, including the Via Appia Traiana, the Via Francigena, and the Cammino di don Tonino Bello, travelled by old and new walkers. By its very nature, over time, the Borgo has been a welcoming place for pilgrims and wayfarers on their way to get to know each other, to dialogue, to seek contact with spirituality through its ancient stones. In line with this vocation for listening and meeting and with the themes of the previous edition, the programme proposed for Sovereto Festival 2024 offers a wide-ranging look at the Borgo, without neglecting the precious local human and artistic resources. The artists on the programme, of national and international renown, will attract fans of jazz, world and art music. Experimentation between the ancient and the contemporary and the fusion of ancient instruments with modern ones represent the distinctive feature of the programme, inspired again this year by the themes of crossroads, exchange, in a word, crossroads. The Festival will take place over three evenings and in two separate locations; inside the Borgo, named: MERIDIANO (atrium of the Sanctuary) and PARALLELO (via Santuario di Sovereto).    During the course of each evening there will be two concerts alternating, at 20:30 and 22:00, on two stages. At the end of each evening, the two ensembles that performed separately on the two stages will be together on the PARALLELO stage for a concluding jam session. The artists on the programme come from different musical traditions and are inclined towards contamination and experimentation. The mission is to connect the narrative of the place, which has hosted travellers from all over the centuries, with music through dialogue between styles and genres, and to celebrate Sovereto as a modern crossroads. The artistic direction of the festival is entrusted to Maestro Giovannangelo de Gennaro, a member of the Calixtinus cultural association, a graduate in Modern Flute at the Nicolò Piccinni Conservatory of Music in Bari, a researcher of medieval music and monody and sacred polyphony from the 7th to the 14th century. Our thanks go to the Municipality of Terlizzi and the Councillor for Culture Daniela Zappatore.
